Soybeans and Soil Fertility: What You Need to Know

As a result of new soybean varieties and new agronomic practices, yield potential is higher now than ever before. That makes the need to replenish the soil with the necessary nutrients even more important for long term success.

A USDA report indicates 4.36 billion bushels of soybeans were harvested in 2016, averaging 52.5 bushels per acre, which removed 63 pounds/acre of potassium (K₂O) from U.S. soils. Potassium helps plants regulate enzymatic activity, withstand drought, and transport sugars and nutrients, all of which are vital for health plant development.

Another critical nutrient to soybeans, boron (B) is a significant component of plant cell walls and reproductive structures. A 60-bushel soybean crop needs close to 0.3 ounces of B per acre.

Research conducted by Dr. Fred Below, professor of crop science at the University of Illinois, has shown that during peak growth, an acre of soybeans can take up nearly 17 pounds of fertilizer each day. The research findings also show that balanced crop nutrition is critical in the early-, mid-season and late-growing phases for soybeans, demonstrating the need for a fertilization plan that will provide season-long nutrient availability.

Aspire® with Boron delivers K and two forms of B — sodium borate releases quickly, and calcium borate releases more slowly — ensuring proper boron nutrition is always within reach during key growth periods throughout the entire season.
