Starting with a blizzard and a bang

March started with a bang ... or a blizzard.

Wind gusts and snow have Austin Blair anxiously awaiting springtime and planting season, but for now, he stays out of the elements as much as he can. March is filled with equipment maintenance, seed and chemical deliveries, and other pre-planting chores.

As much as Austin would like to avoid the tough March weather in Iowa, he knows it plays a big role in his nutrient management for the season ahead. Texture, coupled with water availability, directly impacts the nutrient-holding capacity of soil. Blair Family Farms is made up of mostly silty clay loam soil, known for its good drainage, but that doesn’t mean the weather won’t impact nutrient management.

Learn more about how weather and soil texture can impact nutrient management here and see what else Austin is up to ahead of the busy season below.
