Heritage Family Farms has always been ready to hop in the planter as soon as the weather allows, and 2025 is no different.

From braving the wind to finishing remaining drainage tile projects to planter maintenance and seed treatments, the pre-plant to-do list goes on, but that only builds Makenna Green’s excitement for spring.

One major task on Makenna’s March to-do list is finishing the remaining drainage tile projects on the farm. Makenna’s farm is mostly made up of Drummer and Flanagan soil types, with some Milford soil, which are often associated with the "black dirt" prairie soils in Illinois.

They have poor drainage due to high clay content, which can hinder water movement through the soil, resulting in excess water that can cause root damage, and hinder crop growth and nutrient uptake.

Learn more about the soil profile and how it can affect nutrient uptake here and catch up with Makenna below to see what else she’s got on her to-do list.
